Comparing Weight Gain with Insulin & Metformin with Gestational Diabetes

Pregnancy is a journey filled with many changes, not just physically and emotionally, but also in how we manage our health, especially when it comes to conditions like gestational diabetes (GDM).

As a Maternal-Fetal Medicine Nurse Practitioner, I speak with expecting mamas daily who are navigating the complexities of GDM and the decisions surrounding medication, particularly when it comes to deciding between insulin and metformin.

One concern that pops up a lot is how these medications might affect weight gain during pregnancy.

How Natural Insulin Works

In a non-pregnant state, your pancreas releases insulin, a hormone that helps your body's cells use glucose (sugar) for energy. When blood sugar levels rise, such as after a meal, insulin ensures glucose moves from the bloodstream into the body's cells to keep blood sugar levels stable.

During pregnancy, hormonal changes make your body's cells less responsive to insulin, a condition known as insulin resistance. This can lead to higher blood sugar levels, necessitating extra insulin to keep glucose levels in check.
