A fasting value refers to your blood sugar level after you’ve gone without food for at least 8 hours, typically measured first thing in the morning after waking before eating breakfast.


For pregnant mamas with gestational diabetes, healthcare providers often target a fasting blood sugar level below 95 mg/dL as recommended by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.


Monitoring fasting values helps in understanding how well your body manages blood sugar levels overnight and can indicate how effectively your gestational diabetes is being controlled.


Fasting blood sugars are a critical component in managing gestational diabetes because they reflect the body’s overnight glucose regulation without the influence of recent food intake. Elevated fasting values can indicate insulin resistance or insufficient insulin production, both of which are crucial to manage to prevent complications for both mama and baby.


What Happens Overnight

Overnight, your body goes through several physiological processes that can affect your fasting blood sugar levels. During sleep, the liver releases glucose into the bloodstream to provide energy, a process called gluconeogenesis. In mamas without diabetes, insulin regulates this glucose release pretty well.
